The HQ Building was initiated while Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville (1742 – 1811), was Governor of the Bank. The Bank Headquarters was built by architects Robert Reid (1774 – 1856) and Richard Crichton.

The former Bank of Scotland headquarters, now headquarters of the merged HBOS, has dominated and decorated the northern flank of Edinburgh’s Old Town for 300 years. The restoration and renewal removed the detitus of the 20th century – multiple lifts, and mezzanine floors within the great Telling Hall for instance – and thoroughly repaired and updated the building.
